Bicycle Safety Program Expands Into Brooklyn

Restaurant Delivery Bikers Targeted in New Effort

CARROLL GARDENS — Stuart Gruskin, 50, of New Jersey, was killed in May 2009 when he crossed the street on his lunch hour and a delivery biker speeding the wrong way in Midtown Manhattan knocked into him. Stuart suffered major head injuries and died two days later.

His wife Nancy launched the foundation to encourage safer conditions for pedestrians and bikers. She was successful in getting the mayor to enact a law to require the city to keep statistics about biking accidents, and enlisted both Bike New York and Seamless Web as partners.

Nick Buccolo, an architect and resident of Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill, who heard about Nancy Gruskin and the Gruskin Foundation (www.Grus-kinFoundation.org) to encourage safe biking, decided it was time for its 5 to Ride program to come to Brooklyn…
